BARBOS KICK OFF 2019 IN STYLE

Fall season is back in swing, and the Green and White have been busily preparing themselves for the 2019 – 2020 season. Players resumed 15’s training in mid-August, preparing their bodies for the 10 weeks of physicality and sacrifice that's needed to play the great game of Rugby!

On September 7th, the Denver Barbarians defeated the Northern Colorado Flamingos in a hard fought battle, 45-29. The game saw the NoCo Flaming O’s grab an early lead through some physical running from their forward pack. However, the Barbo leadership in the back line tightened up in the second half to score numerous tries as the team tacked on 45 before the final whistle. While the Flamingos are competing in the Frontier’s Rock Mountain Championship (D3), the Barbos could see them later in the fall on November 2nd (the tentative date for the RMRU fall finals).

On September 14th, the Barbos participated in a 3-way scrimmage between the Colorado School Mines and a high-performance group of athletes selected by USA for development. All three teams benefited from the session and the Barbo players enjoyed lunch and libations at the team’s sponsored pub Three Dogs Tavern on W 32nd Street in the West Highlands. Three Dogs will be airing all of the USA Eagles matches (regardless of wacky time zone difference) for the 2019 Rugby World Cup. Come root on Ben Pinkelman as he leads the Eagles in a difficult pool featuring England, France, Argentina, Tonga and our beloved USA Eagles. Dates and times to come for BarboFam watch parties.

There’s nothing like Ruggerfest on a Sunday

he Barbos are now looking to have a strong week of training leading into the historic 52nd annual Ruggerfest in Aspen, Colorado. The Barbos play their pool games EARLY on Saturday so be sure to set your alarm clocks if you plan on making the trip to Aspen for this amazing tournament.

The Denver Barbarians tied the Denver Highlanders in 1970 for the title mug. Since then, they have won Ruggerfest 9 times (with an additional win coming under the name Pro Leisure Tour All Stars). The Barbos have not won since 2013, which was their 3rd straight win at that point. Since 2013, the winners have been the Glendale Raptors, Gentleman of Aspen, and the Dark N Stormy Misfits (in that order).

The Barbos hope to win back the hardware next weekend on the infamous Wagner Field. If you are planning to make the trip up to Aspen, please wear your Green and White proud!

The full Aspen schedule for old and young boys can be viewed at the Ruggerfest website.
