BARBOS DEFEAT BOULDER TO OPEN 2022 FALL SEASON

Is there anything better than a fresh set of jerseys … The Barbos return to their traditional Green & White hoops!

Your Denver Barbarians kicked off their 2022 fall season with a strong victory against Boulder RFC Saturday afternoon. It was a top to bottom performance as the forward pack and the backs blended and asserted their own strengths throughout the game. The late September crowd swelled to nearly 300 people as the two teams took the pitch and the charcoal was lit on the grill. After an exciting match between the Colorado Graywolves and Lindenwood Women, the Barbos received the opening kick and the stage was set for the 2022 Rocky Mountain Rugby Premiership clash.

The men in Green & White crossed the white line early and often in the first half, opening the scoring through the young (but experienced) fullback Luka Pavlakis. A line break in the first minute resulted in Pavlakis’ first try of the day as the Barbos got 5 points on the board in the first minute. Boulder countered back with a score of their own, and the score was knotted at 5-5, 8 minutes into the match. But, it was from that point on when the Green & White attack grabbed a hold of the game. A barrage of tries from the 10-40 minute mark put Dante Brown, Alex Wormer, Conor O’Brien, Stevie Karas (the skipper), Alex Schultz, Luka Pavlakis (again), Jason Tubbs Christensen, and the entire forward pack (penalty try) on the score sheet. Liam Wynne ticked over 6 conversions and score at halftime was 59-5.

In the second half, Boulder seemed to shore up their defense and scored a well worked multi phase try to bring the game to 59-10. But the men in Green & White continued to attack with intent and the rewards soon came. Additional tries were added by Benny “The Jet” Ferrazza, Dante Brown (again), and the young buck / Iowa Central product Gus Sokol. Luka Pavlakis converted all three tries and when the final whistle blew, the score was 80-15.

While the score line was certainly something to celebrate, the Barbos know their test this weekend will be paramount. The RMR Premiership side will travel to Park City Utah as they face off with the PC Haggis. The Barbos will be challenged this season as the club looks to field two competitive side in two separate divisions. On the other side of the coin is the good news … there is plenty of rugby to be played!
