BARBOS SMACK QUEEN CITY IN A SHUTOUT WIN

As the playoffs approach, each game gets more important. Players look to refine their craft as coaches evaluate. Each passing week brings additional pressure. “Win or go home” is right around the corner.

While these warm up “friendlies” don’t count in the league standings, anytime a team claim’s to be the best damn rugby club in Denver (scroll to March 4th post), we in the Green & White take it personally. The Barbos named a strong side with every intention of continuing their winning ways. Starting fly half Ryan Walker has been clutch with the first XV graphics (see below).

The game started sloppy. Any momentum that was gained through continual phase play was lost in the shadow of the whistle. Eventually, the Barbos worked the ball across the try line through hard running and finishing power. To the delight of the BarboFam, our tried and true fans that make the Green & White so special, the defense continued to hold. Throughout the entirety of the game, Queen City did not score a single point. Dynamic attack is fun, and easy to root for. But as the saying goes … “Defense wins Championships”.

A Photo From Fall of 2021: The Barbos first XV also beat Queen City that day by a wide margin. The Barbos 2nd XV partnered with the Colorado Rush to defeat Queen City’s 2nd XV.

In summary, the team didn’t play their best game, but they certainly closed the gate on Queen City’s attack. Holding a shutout is a matter of pride, and the defense was stellar throughout the second half. As the finishing players subbed on, the pride and intent of maintaining the goose egg only amplified. 7’s sensation Alex Wormer (who wears #7 on the XV’s pitch) had a beautiful chip n chase, which he collected himself, and dished inside to Brian Rice who galloped over the line. Conor O’Brien got over the line via some fancy feet (dancing shoes) and had a brace of tries himself.

The Barbos beat Queen City handily back in 2008. Some things don’t change.

Lots to improve upon as the stakes are raised each week leading towards the playoffs. Eric Sykes was class throughout the day. The senior leader is finding his form at the right time and will look to continue to steer the backline in the coming weeks.

Final Score: Denver Barbarians - 64 Queen City - 0

Tries: Tyler Grant, Brett DeBoy, Conor O’Brien (2x), Michael Lawrenson (2x), Eric Sykes (2x), Brian Rice, Carmine Hernandez
