MEET ALEX WORMER
Born and bred in Colorado, rugby runs through Alex ‘Worm’ Wormer’s icy cold veins. After graduating with an engineering degree from Cal Poly, he returned to Colorado and immediately tried his hand at men’s club 7’s. Like a good late night candle, he burned slow and steady … time was in his favor. He continued to grow, not just physically, but intellectually. His nuanced understanding of ball flow, gap creating & overall creativity began to shine. Strange considering most engineers are more practical and rational than creative. But Alex has always defied the norms … on and off the pitch.
Before anyone even stepped foot on the pitch this summer, I was already leaning on Alex to step up this season. I reached out to him asking him to potentially house and mentor a younger player on the team. I didn’t really have anyone specifically in mind, I guess I just knew how special a guy like Worm is and how much a younger player could grow under his tutelage. He politely rebuffed my nudge, but little did I know he had his own plans in order.
Two months later, who shows up to Denver (housed by Alex) AND to the first training ….. ? The little Worm himself, 18 year old younger brother Ian ‘Grub’ Wormer. Ian had a spectacular season. Aside from Ben Pinkelman himself, I don’t ever think I’ve seen another player go straight from high school rugby to full blown men’s club 7’s season …. until Ian Wormer. Thank you Alex for rebuffing my requests and bringing in the best possible type of teammate. Family.
