SUMMER 7’S HAVE ARRIVED
The Barbos opened up their 2024 summer 7’s with a strong showing in the Gateway 7’s in St. Louis, Saturday June 15th. The men in Green & White played sharp throughout the day, winning 4 straight pool games before a tantalizing final against the St. Louis Bombers. The cup final went into sudden death, and the home side won 26-21 after 5 minutes of extra time. The Barbos played with strong cohesion throughout the day, and the lessons from the first tournament in the summer will be valuable.

Game 1 saw the Barbos defeat the Chicago Lions 26-5. The running attack and ruck pressure was stout, led by John Ryberg who was consistently making meters each time he touched the ball. The team kept ball in hand, and starved Chicago of possession.
Game 2 against St. Louis Bombers B side resulted in a 28-0 shutout. As is necessary in a long day of 7’s, many players moved into different positions throughout the day. Starters were rotated and changed, and the team was able to test out different lineup combinations.
The stakes were ratcheted up in game 3 as the Men in Green & White faced off with the KC Blues A side. The lads rose to the occasion with a sound 36-5 victory. It was Barbo rookie Kobe Millar who was the standout player, working his ass of all game in attack and defense. His work rate helped the Barbos put up a convincing scoreline and build confidence into the back half of the day.
Game 4 vs. the Omaha Goats was another high scoring affair, with the Barbos as victors 42-5. Jack Miller led the charge with his handy work around the breakdown, and a step in the open field that would result in an impressive try scored.
After four victories, it was time for the big match. The final, against the home side St. Louis Bombers. The Barbos found themselves with a lead at halftime, with Rufus McLean scooping up a loose ball and bolting for a 60 meter try. But credit goes to the Bombers who fought back in the second half to send the match into extras. After 5 minutes of back and forth attack and defense, the Bombers scored to win the final 26-21.
It was a great weekend of rugby, and I’m sure both the Barbos and the Bombers will be hankering for a potential rematch at club 7’s nationals if the stars align.
